Motherwell debut for reporter

Lanarkshire People reporter Graeme Watson managed to team up with Scottish Premier League side Motherwell – but despite support from his family and friends he never got to kick a ball on their newly-relaid pitch.

He joined the stars of the under 18 youth team at Fir Park, as well as 30 other volunteers, to take part in an abseil to raise cash for the Marie Curie Cancer Appeal.

Graeme raised £536 on behalf of the paper with a 100ft descent down the front of Motherwell’s South Stand.

He said afterwards: “It was quite frightening looking down at the people below and realising just how high up I actually was. I always thought you had to be a little mad to do something like this, so people have been right about me all these years.

“The guys from the climbing centre were excellent and they talked me through everything and made it sound easy. But that first step off at the top was something else.”

Editor Martin Clark added: “This was a tremendous effort by Graeme and he’s already looking at other ideas for further sponsored events including a tandem-parachute jump. This is the first sponsored event The People has ever taken part in and we hope to make this a regular activity.”
