Mercury to drop edition

The Leicester Mercury is dropping one of its editions after carrying out research into its readership.

The paper currently publishes an Asia edition to serve the Asian communities of Leicester.

But research by the paper found that the vast majority of people questioned felt the city and its communities should be served by just one newspaper.

Those questioned said they felt this would encourage good relations between the city’s varied communities and build understanding between different cultures.

From October 21, the Asia edition will cease publication and all the news that was published in that edition will be in the main editions – the first, city and final – instead.

Mercury editor Nick Carter said: “I think this is an important step forward in promoting understanding between our different communities.

“When the Asia edition was launched more than 10 years ago, it was believed people in the Asian communities wanted their own, dedicated publication.

“Time has shown that right now, those communities are more determined than ever before to play a full and active part in the future of Leicester.

“One newspaper for one city has to be the right way forward.”
