Readers of the Leicester Mercury have poured more than £1,000 into a fund to make a dying grandmother’s wish come true.

Thanks to the generous donations, Carol Caven’s grandchildren – Allyssa, aged six, and James, aged five – will be flown home with their mother Nicola to spend precious time with Carol.

The 50-year-old former shop assistant was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. She has not seen her daughter and grandchildren since they emigrated to Calgary last May.
