Mercury poll asks: should life mean life?

The Leicester Mercury is running a mass survey into crime and punishment, and is asking: should life mean life for convicted murderers?

The survey is part of the Great Crime Debate which the paper has been running for the last five weeks, launched after Home Secretary David Blunkett said sweeping changes were needed in the justice system.

Hundreds of Mercury readers have already written to the paper or taken part in the debate on its website, and the paper is now looking at two of the most controversial issues – life sentencing and the early release of prisoners.

Readers will be able to voice their opinions by using a voting slip published in the Mercury, which asks:

  • Do you think life should mean life for convicted murderers?
  • What should be the minimum sentence for murder?
  • Do you think criminals convicted of serious sexual or violent crimes should be made to serve their full sentence?
  • Do you think they should serve a lengthy community service order on their release?

The results of the poll will be published at the end of the week and passed on to the Home Office, which has promised to look closely at the response as it helps draft the new laws.
