Mercury marks a year to remember

The Leicester Mercury has produced a special 28-page publication to celebrate its year of success.

The Mercury was named UK regional newspaper of the year in the 2001 Newspapers Awards, run by the Newspaper Society.

Editor, Nick Carter says: “While readers appreciated the important role it played and the service it provided, the newspaper had never picked up a top national award for its content and design.”

The supplement shows campaigns, key stories, community activities and how the paper is produced.

It includes the successful campaign to get its readers to observe the two-minute silence, which was given the highest honour by the Royal British Legion.

It also highlights their Stay Off The Tracks campaign to help cut down the vandalism and attacks carried out at Leicestershire’s railways lines.

This includes the Mercury campaign of Toys On The Table which helped hundreds of needy children.

The supplement brings to light all the stories that contributed towards it being the UK regional newspaper of the year.

With nearly 300,000 readers the Leicester Mercury continues to help and inform communities.

A double page in the centre of the publication shows Nick Carter at the awards ceremony.

He said: “The tremendous accolade came almost exactly one year after the launch of a new look and new content for the newspaper – improvements which have attracted more than 13,000 readers every day.

“In its pages you will find how Mercury readers have helped us to make a difference in a whole host of campaigns and how the newspapers has worked with other organisations to improve the quality of life in our local communities.”
