Looking back on some of the greats

Readers of the Stoke Sentinel have been asked to vote for the man and woman of the last 100 years.

The paper has been running a series of profiles on some of the most influential people from North Staffordshire and South Cheshire during the last century.

And now it is asking readers to decide who should be awarded the prestigious titles.

Nominations include MP Jack Ashley who campaigned to get justice for Thalidomide victims, and the novelist Vera Brittain.

Readers can either write in with their choices, call a special hotline, or send an e-mail.

Head of news Martin Tideswell said: ”The idea came from a reader and we felt that paying tribute to some of the great names of the 20th Century who came from North Staffordshire and South Cheshire would be a good way of marking the millennium.

“So far the response from readers has been excellent and we will be announcing the winners of our poll on January 8.”
