Journalism examiner steps down

Bill Wood, the chief examiner for journalism training organisation the NCTJ, has stepped down from the key role.

He worked full time at the National Council for the Training of Journalists for 17 years until 1992 and for many years chaired its newspaper journalism examinations board.

In the years since then he has continued to set exams, mark and moderate them.

Bill started his career on the weekly Alnwick Gazette in Northumberland before moving to the Shields Gazette as a reporter.

He progressed through the ranks as a sub-editor, chief sub and then news editor – and it was in this role he started his work with the development of industry trainees.

He went on to set up the journalism training courses at Darlington College of Technology before moving on to manage IPC’s newspaper training scheme, which he combined with his role as training manager at West of England Newspapers.
