Journal marks tragedy anniversary

The 50th anniversary of the Lynton and Lynmouth flood disaster has been marked by a weekly newspaper with a special 12-page supplement.

The North Devon Journal included the supplement in its August 15 edition, exactly 50 years after more than 30 people were killed by the floods.

Deputy news editor Kate Helyer, said: “This is very important for us to cover, it was a major disaster in the area.

“We have been inviting readers to write in with stories and memories of the floods and the response to that has been very good.

“The supplement will include eye witness accounts, old pictures from the days after the flood and a timetable of events of August 15, 1952.”

The Journal will also be covering the events which are being held in the village to mark the anniversary.

Kate added: “There is going to be a memorial service using the notes from the original sermon held after the tragedy. A simple wooden cross is also going to be placed where the two rivers came together.

“The paper next week will cover what has been done today and we will be giving the events a good splash in that.”
