Independent survey puts Chronicle on top

The Evening Chronicle is still the North East’s biggest selling daily newspaper, new research has revealed.

An independent survey showed the Newcastle Chronicle reaches an average of 254,000 people every day and more than 400,000 adults every week.

Research, by RSGB Ltd, shows Trinity Mirror’s titles, which include the Chronicle, and sister papers The Journal, Sunday Sun, Evening Gazette in Middlesbrough, Herald & Post and the company’s new title, Metro North East, are the leading publications in the North East – read by more than 1.2 million adults every week.

The Journal is the most popular quality tabloid in the North East with an average of 117,000 readers. It is also the number one title for business people in the area, with increased readership of its daily business coverage as well as the highly regarded Northern Business and Small Business sections.

The Sunday Sun is the most preferred regional Sunday paper, with an average of 350,000 readers every week and a circulation from Scotland to Yorkshire, and Cumbria in the West, with an increasing readership, particularly in Wearside.

The Herald & Post series of free newspapers has recorded a strong performance.

Newcastle Chronicle and Journal’s five editions of the Herald & Post, from Northumberland to South Tyneside and Gateshead, boast a combined total readership of 504,000 adults – 45 per cent of all adults in the area. Motoring and property sections show increased readership.

The latest addition to the family of titles produced by Newcastle Chronicle and Journal is Metro North East. Research shows since its launch in January 2000, it has become the most popular free daily newspaper with an audited distribution figure of 69,020 copies per day.

The Teesside area is dominated by the Evening Gazette with average issue readers of 176,000 adults a day.

Regional marketing director at Newcastle Chronicle and Journal and the Gazette Media Company, Jane Nugent, said: “The results of this important readership survey are very pleasing and testimony to the fact that our titles are still market leaders in the North East.

“I am sure our new media pack and the quality of the data we have will be of great value to advertisers and agencies who need accurate audience reach figures for media campaign plans.”

The research also has statistics on the titles’ key platforms and supplements.
