I saw him standing there…

The Leicester Mercury played cupid to two love-struck readers – and they’re now set to wed.

Andrew Crane and Clare Worth met at a Christmas singles party organised by the Mercury last December, and Andrew has now proposed to his sweetheart.

The pair were among hundreds of people looking for that special someone at the Rhythm Rooms in Leicester.

Andrew swept Clare off her feet by giving her a glass of champagne, before the pair danced the night away together.

Clare, a nanny, says that before she met Andrew she had almost given up on finding the “right” person.

“I saw him dancing on his own, wearing a white shirt, so he stood out.

“I could sense he was going to come over. Once I got to know him I knew he was the man for me,” she said.

Farmer Andrew had also been unlucky in love and said he found it difficult to meet prospective girlfriends because of his unsociable job.

“Clare’s my first girlfriend. In the past I never used to go out much. You don’t get to meet anyone when you’re stuck on a tractor.

“But I got to the stage when I thought I really wanted to settle down, that’s why I went to the party.

“Lots of people have a low opinion of singles parties. But they work. It’s a good way of meeting people,” said Andrew.

The Mercury is now offering tickets to this year’s big singles event.
