Hot shot junior

A hot-shot reporter is making his mark in the press – at the tender age of 13.

Daniel Kent is a regular contributor to the sports pages of the Sutton Coldfield Observer. Each week at least one, and usually more, of his reports grace the back pages.

And in addition to his newspaper work, he’s now become the editor of his own football fanzine dedicated to his old team, Colron Boys under 11s.

Features include player profiles, match stats, features and match reports. He sends the fanzine into the paper and the sports desk is allowed to lift his articles.

Editor Gary Phelps said: “We got the magazine to look for a footballing star and we’ve found a journalistic one instead.

“The way he’s going he’s certainly got a future in newspapers.

“He does the work for the love of the game. He started it completely off his own back when our sports reporters asked local teams to contribute. Daniel had links with Colron Boys.

“We have a bustling local football scene, and that includes the juniors, and we use reports as much as we can.”

  • The Sutton Coldfield Observer, a free weekly with a 43,000-plus circulation, was named Best Free Weekly Newspaper in the Midlands and East Anglia at The Newspaper Society’s Weekly Newspaper Awards 2000.
