If you decide to go into the horror business, you can’t go wrong with a name like Hitchcock.
And like his namesake, the film genius Alfred, editorial artist David Hitchcock – no relation – was ahead of his time when he came up with the idea of a black and white “comic” book on a highwayman horror story.
“I started it six years ago, because there was nothing like it in that genre being published. I’ve always like comics – not The Dandy and The Beano, but graphic novels,” explained David.
Now, David’s book, Spirit of the Highwayman – which was published last year – has been “followed” by the hit Johnny Depp film Sleepy Hollow which covers some of the same themes.
David worked on his labour of love some weekends, when the mood took him. It was a massive undertaking featuring some 650 detailed drawings. He had some help in the early stages of plot development from a friend, Owen Richards.
“I shelved the book idea completely for two years because I didn’t think I would get anywhere with it. But last year I dusted it off, got it finished and found a London printer who could cost-effectively produce a short print run, with the emphasis on quality at the right price,” said David who has worked at the Derby Evening Telegraph for 12 years.
Most of David’s books have been sold in America, but some copies are still available, priced £6. For more details, contact David at [email protected].
