Henderson to edit The Journal

Gerard Henderson, editor of The Gazette, Blackpool, has been named as the editor of The Journal, Newcastle.

He will take up his post on July 3, succeeding Mark Dickinson, whose appointment as editor of the Liverpool Echo was announced in March.

Mr Henderson – known as Ged – is 40 and is married with two children. He hails from Lancaster and supports Preston North End FC.

He has been at The Gazette for a couple of years, during which time the paper has gone tabloid.

He has previously worked as news editor of the Lancashire Evening Post, business correspondent of the Manchester Evening News and investigations and chief feature writer of the Liverpool Echo. He also worked at The Journal and its sister paper, the Evening Chronicle, during the 80s.

A deputy editor for The Journal has yet to be chosen. He or she will succeed Paul Robertson, who left in April to edit the Evening Gazette, Middlesbrough.
