Happy ending for animal tale

The power of the press – and the public’s insatiable appetite for a cuddly animal story – has led to a happy ending for Sadie the lurcher.

She was dubbed Britain’s most unwanted dog in a heart-rending story by the Gloucestershire Echo and was destined to end her days in the kennels.

But 2,000 would-be owners deluged the National Canine Defence League’s kennels near Evesham with calls, all hopeful they could take Sadie home.

As the longest serving inmate, Sadie was brought to the centre in 1993 after being abandoned, and her sad story was picked up by one of the national papers.

Calls came in from as far afield as Lancashire and Scotland and a shortlist of 12 prospective owners has been put together.
