Good news scheme asks people to think positive

A scheme which aims to give individuals the cash and advice they need to start up new projects to benefit themselves and their community has been launched at the offices of the Leicester Mercury.

The Positive People Millennium Award Scheme has been set up by the Mercury, along with Leicester City Council and Leicestershire and Rutland County Councils.

The group, led by the city council successfully bid for £668,880 from the Millennium Commission to create the award fund. Local businesses have also pledged around £400,000 to add to the total so far.

People with bright ideas will be able to apply for an award, worth between £2,000 and £5,000, from June.

To qualify the projects must combat social exclusion, help people feel a part of Leicestershire and Rutland life and break down social barriers.

Millennium Commission director Mike O’Connor said: “The Positive People Millennium Awards are a fantastic opportunity for people in Leicester to put their bright ideas into action and make a difference.”

At the launch were Leicester Mercury managing director Tony Hill, editor Nick Carter, Lord Mayor Coun Barbara Chambers and Millennium Commission director Mike O’Connor.
