Glasgow gangs unmasked by Evening Times investigation

The Evening Times has carrying a week-long special investigation into Glasgow’s teenage gangs.

Chief reporter David Leask and staff photographer Lenny Warren spent almost a month investigating the city’s gangs.

Monday’s paper carried the first of the six-day package across eight pages including a dramatic poster front page.

Further reports have during the rest of this week and included interviews with victims of gang violence and those working to eradicate the problem.

The coverage has generated a huge amount of feedback from readers and has also been followed up by BBC Scotland.

The investigation also featured a city-wide map showing which gangs are operating where – the most definitive guide to Glasgow’s gangs ever published.

The location of more than 100 gangs was revealed and there were other spreads on “interneds”, who arrange gang fights online and girl gangs.

There were also first person pieces from senior police officers and youth workers who are trying to bring an end to a culture which has shamed Glasgow for decades.

Acting editor Janette Harkess said: “Glasgow is a regenerating city which has worked incredibly hard to lose its No Mean City tag.

“The time is right to challenge the territorial gang culture which continues to ruin thousands of lives throughout the city.

“In researching and publishing this ground-breaking week-long investigation into Glasgow’s Gangs, it has been vital the Evening Times has maintained a responsible and non-sensationalist approach.

“I am delighted at the level of debate which the series has already generated.”
