Gazette sponsors the Big Dig

The Kentish Gazette is backing one of the largest urban archaeological digs ever undertaken in the country.

The Gazette is the first corporate sponsor of the Big Dig, Canterbury Archaeological Trust’s four-year excavation of the Whitefriarsarea of the city prior to a multi-million pound redevelopment.

The paper has “bought” a square metre plot of the dig site for £500.

In return, it will be notified of any significant finds on the plot andcredited as sponsor – although we will not get to keep the artefacts.

As part of a tie-up with the Trust, Gazette reporters and photographers will have unrivalled access to the site and to major finds.

The Gazette will also be running reader competitions and school days, providing plenty of promotional opportunities for the company.

News editor Tricia Jamieson said: “The Big Dig is a fascinating adventurefor Canterbury which we are covering in our newspapers so it was an idealopportunity for us to get involved and get the ball rolling.”
