Gazette goes online for election time

The Galloway Gazette has launched a new website in time for the election results.

www.gallowaygazette.com went live last week, and is being used by the paper to give its readers exclusive coverage of the Scottish Parliamentary Elections and the local council elections.

The deadlines of the paper, which recently introduced colour and changed to a tabloid format, mean it was already making its way onto newsagents’ shelves as election results are announced.

So to ensure readers didn’t miss out, a front page teaser directed them to the website for the latest election news.

Two reporters and a photographer worked through last night on the story, to get copy and pictures from the Dumfries count online at around 4am.

And after some well-earned sleep they are due to return to Dumfries this afternoon to cover the local authority count.

Chief reporter Adrian Braddy, who helped launch the site, said: “We wanted our readers to read the news from both elections as soon as possible, and the new website has been launched at just the right time.

“Previously when a story has broken at the weekend we have printed special editions, but this way is quicker and more effective.”

The print edition of the paper will carry more in-depth election coverage when it is published the following Friday.

  • The 133-year-old Galloway Gazette serves much of South West Scotland and has a circulation of more than 7,000. It was acquired by Scottish Radio Holdings from Johnston Press last year, which itself acquired the title from Regional Independent Media in April 2002.
