Gazette backs race for life

The Basingstoke and North Hampshire Gazette-backed Race for Life has once again opened its phone lines for the build-up to this year’s event.

Basingstoke held its first races for the scheme, in aid of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, last year – and raised over £120,000 when 2,500 women took part.

This year’s race will be held in June and organisers hope they can double the amount of participants from last year.

Jan Lefley is one of the driving forces behind the Basingstoke challenge, which saw a record number of entries for an inaugural event. The race raised three times the amount of money organisers had predicted.

She said: “We are going even bigger this year. We are asking everyone who entered last year to bring a friend. Imperial Cancer has projected 3,500 entrants for Basingstoke this year but we are expecting 5,000.”
