>Funeral of north-west editor

A former editor of the Barrow News, Bob Strike, has died, aged 89.

The well-known journalist was also a county councillor.

He started his career in newspapers as a junior reporter on the Chorley Guardian and moved on to the Lancashire Daily Post as a junior before helping his father launch a niche paper for egg producers.

His next move was to the Chichester Observer. He returned from service in the Second World War to become the youngest editor in the country at that time, taking over at the Retford Times aged 28.

He left for Barrow on the recommendation of his brother, who worked there as a photographer, and stayed with the Barrow News for 25 years until his retirement in 1980.

The funeral service took place at St Anne’s Church, Thwaites, and was attended by mourners including former senior councillors.
