Former Times & Star editor dies at 87

Former West Cumberland Times & Star editor Stan Hornsby has died, aged 87.

He had enjoyed a 50-year journalism career, and edited the Times & Star for six years until his retirement in 1981.

Stan had also worked for the Barrow-based North West Evening Mail, and later moved to the Whitehaven News as deputy editor to Walter Thomson.

He took over from the late Graeme Atkinson on the West Cumberland Times & Star around 1975.

Stan, who lived in Cockermouth, was also local chairman of the North West Guild of British Newspaper Editors.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie, children Valerie and Stephen, and grandchildren Gemma, Debbie and Andrew.
