Extra edition breaks news of tragedy

The Hull Daily Mail reacted quickly as the tragedy of trapped demolition workers unfolded on Tuesday.

Pages one and three were already devoted to the story when the last edition finished printing at 2.20pm, but the press was told not to lift the plates. Ten minutes later came news that one body had been found. The paper ran a Late Final of 2,500 copies.

The bodies of the two other men trapped beneath 50 tonnes of rubble in a collapsed warehouse were found at 3.30pm. Deputy editor Mel Cook said that to have changed the paper at that stage would have taken too long and risked the sale, so instead, a new lead story was carried on the paper’s website.
