Dedicated to delivery

The army of people who make sure regional newspapers arrive on reader’s doormats every day are sometimes forgotten by the reporters once their deadlines are met.

But the Evening Chronicle in Newcastle devoted a page three lead and three photographs to one of its dedicated delivery people.

Leslie Mole is 75 and has only one leg, but that doesn’t stop him getting up at 5.30am every day to help open up his son’s newsagent’s shop and sort the papers – including 20 which he delivers himself.

In the evening, he helps out again, making sure the Chronicle’s readers get their copies pushed through their letterboxes.

It’s a routine Mr Mole has followed for the past 10 years, reporter Vince Gledhill said in his article.

“I just deliver to addresses near the shop. I enjoy doing it,” said Mr Mole.

Mr Mole lost his leg in a pit accident in 1960 but, nine months later, was back at the pit, where he worked until he retired in 1983.
