Daily Echo Daredevils join the Race for Life

The Southern Daily Echo printed a 20-page supplement covering Southampton’s Race for Life in which 40 of the paper’s staff took part.

The Daily Echo Daredevils joined 10,000 women on the streets of the city for the 5km race.

The paper’s coverage included first person reports of the race, photographs of the action and a list of names of all the runners.

The supplement proved so popular that extra copies of the paper had to be ordered for some retailers.

Deputy news editor Jenny Makin took part for the Daily Echo. She said: “It was just fantastic. Southampton’s main road was a sea of 10,000 people.

“There was a minute’s silence beforehand as almost everyone in the race had been touched by cancer in their lives. People had messages on their backs to loved ones and a lot of people were in tears.

“It is expected that £600,000 will be raised from the Southampton race alone.”

Three of the Daily Echo’s photographers covered the event and the paper is hoping for a bumper sale of pictures from the hundreds that have been published on its website.
