Cricketing tribute to former sports editor

Gloucestershire cricket club Old Patesians have staged a day of cricket to honour Pete Walter, who was their president and secretary for decades before his death just before the start of the 2001 season.

Walter, sports editor of the Gloucestershire Echo for 44 years and known at the club as Willie, already has a tree planted in his memory.

The club’s under-13s started the day, then the under-15s played their fathers and a PJ Walter Memorial XI played the current first team in the showpiece finale.

Old Pats stalwarts Hugh Etheridge, Tony Anhoury and Taj Golesworthy, whose father Ian is similarly remembered every year at a rugby day, paid tribute to him.
