Tony Hadley backs Haringey Independent's parking plea

Singer Tony Hadley has been in contact with the Haringey Independent to complain about the local council.

The former voice of Spandau Ballet phoned the paper after it launched a campaign against Haringey Council’s plans for new parking laws in the Muswell Hill area.

He accused councillors of being out of touch and not listening to residents.

The Independent launched its ‘Let the People Decide’ campaign after the council announced plans for a controlled parking scheme where residents on certain streets would have to buy permits to park there.

The newspaper is protesting at the lack of public consultation and is demanding that the council ballots residents to find out if the scheme is wanted.

Pledging his support to the campaign, Hadley said: “In Hampstead where Camden Council brought in restrictions the shops are suffering because people just can’t be bothered to go there.”

He predicted that the plans would have a similar effect in Haringey.

And he said: “People think the shops make a lot of money but they pay very high business rates and can’t afford to lose money.”

The singer finished his tirade by expressing his disapointment at the council’s attitude.

He complained: “What annoys me most is that it puts so much effort into traffic calming and winding up motorists but it can’t get its own house in order and provide the services people need.”
