Support for virus baby BJ

The Mercury series of newspapers in South London has received a great response to its Baby BJ campaign.

The newspaper, which covers Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley and Streatham, launched the appeal to buy therapeutic equipment for a baby with meningitis.

BJ – full name Brian James – contracted the potentially fatal virus in August and it has claimed his right leg, left foot and the fingers of his right hand.

The Mercury asked readers to donate £12,000 to buy a cover for the boy’s therapy pool.

And since the appeal was featured on the newspaper’s front page, donations have been pouring in. Many readers have called the paper asking how they can help.

BJ’s mum, Diane Applegate, told the paper’s readers: “Thank you all so much for the money you have collected for our little man BJ.

“I don’t believe in God but I do believe that with all the love you are sending, this will be like healing.”
