The power of the press was demonstrated when the Leicester Mercury’s Shelflife team stepped in to win a refund for a couple having problems with their new kitchen table.
It was an unusual and high quality table – costing £2,550 – and the owners didn’t expect it to break within six months.
But the marble-effect legs started cracking and try as they might, Lorna Headley and Phil Coleman just couldn’t get anywhere with the shop.
They had spoken to store staff, written letters, paid £95 for an independent report but without success.
After Shelflife got involved, the store offered a £1,750 refund, which the couple accepted.
Trading standards advised other readers to stick to their guns, an officer adding: “Don’t be afraid to complain.”
