Standard declares victory in fight to save pool

The Skegness Standard has declared victory in its campaign to save a popular paddling pool in the town.

The weekly paper had called on the ‘Fairy Dell’ to be reopened, and East Lindsey District Council has now announced plans to refurbish the pool.

The Standard’s fight saw the paper’s most popular campaign in living memory, as it was inundated with hundreds of calls, letters and e-mails from readers demanding that the paddling pool be saved.

Every reader who voted in a special phone and text poll on the subject also backed the paper’s fight, and around 400 people signed a petition which editor John Cowpe presented to ELDC chairman Coun Brian Burnett (below).

John said: “We’re obviously delighted that the district council has now agreed to refurbish the Fairy Dell.

“It is particularly loved by generations of people, families who have brought their children and grandchildren to the pool.

“At last the council has listened to people’s views and both the paper and local people are really pleased.”
