Speculation threat to Downing hearing

Stories claiming the Stephen Downing case will NOT be re-investigated could prejudice the convicted murderer’s appeal hearing, campaigning editor Don Hale claimed today.

A leaked Criminal Cases Review Commission document was reported in a national newspaper as stating that the case will be dropped following Downing’s appeal.

The article also suggested that Don Hale’s campaigning had held up the investigation and delayed the prisoner’s release.

The Derbyshire man was freed from prison last month after 27 years in prison for a murder he claims he did not commit.

Don Hale, of the Matlock Mercury, has led his campaign for freedom.

Downing faces an appeal hearing, probably next month, when it is expected the conviction will be quashed.

Don said: “Even if they have made up their minds they couldn’t say anything because it would prejudice the case.

“If they said they were looking for two men it would suggest Stephen was innocent. If they said they weren’t looking for anyone else it could imply his guilt.
