Row over deadly roundabout

There is mixed news for the Ipswich Evening Star in its battle to get changes made to a deadly roundabout in Felixstowe.

The Highways Agency has agreed to install warning signs, road markings and an advisory 20mph limit at the Dock Spur roundabout – but has stopped short of making major changes.

The Evening Star organised a petition for changes to the roundabout after motorist Martin O’Sullivan was crushed when a lorry overturned and flattened his car.

The roundabout is seen as dangerous because more than 6,000 trucks use it every day to reach Britain’s biggest container port.

Now the paper has seen details of the proposed changes – and campaigners are disappointed with the news.

Councillor Andy Smith said: “We now need to press the agency to revise its policy regarding a long-term proposal and to urge them to bid for finance for a major scheme for a flyover to and from the port.”

Despite detailing the changes, the Highways Agency has been unable to confirm when the work was due to take place.

Campaigner John Green said: “I am disgusted that the agency says there will not be major work.”
