Paper's protest halts plans

A former chemist shop in Belper is to be preserved – thanks to the local paper.

The Belper News led a campaign to save the historic frontage of the former Calvert’s Chemist after a planning application was submitted to demolish the 150-year-old building.

The campaign was backed by councillors and residents and the plans were altered to reflect public opinion.

The new planning application – which has still to be approved – would see the frontage retained and only the rear of the shop knocked down to make way for two new shops.

All the historic features would remain.

An Internet vote on the Belper News website reflected the public’s opposition to the original plans with more than 90 per cent preferring to keep the original shop.
