Norwich to keep its conker trees

The Norwich Evening News has been victorious in its campaign against proposals to cut down 17 conker trees in the city.

The paper’s Save the Trees campaign was backed by media from across the country, who gathered to hear an announcement that only two Horse Chestnut trees will now be cut down.

A report in the Evening News last June claimed the trees were getting the chop because children could get hurt collecting conkers, cars could get damaged when conkers fell and conkers made the road slippery.

The council denied such reports claiming the trees earmarked for the chop were, like many others in the city, diseased.

But following an inspection of all the trees, only one was found to be structurally unsafe and a second to be infected with a fungal disease. The 15 healthy trees will remain, under continual assessment.

The council has promised that two felled Horse Chestnut trees will be replaced by Oak, Elm or similar trees – depending on the views of families in the area.
