New challenge is set for literacy campaign

A Right to Read campaign, backed by the Yorkshire Evening Post, has reached its half-way mark.

The target was to get 3,000 volunteers from the business world into schools to help young readers on a one-to-one basis.

Now, 1,500 people have been signed up, and the Chairman of Right to Read Steve Auckland has increased the target to 5,000.

The project was launched by the Prince of Wales in 1998, and he was recently given an update on its progress.

Mr Auckland said: “Prince Charles said our scheme was so impressive it should be a model for the rest of the country.”
