More than 100 potential governors come forward

The Leicester Mercury’s efforts to recruit more school governors have resulted in more than 100 new applications.

The newspaper has been running a series of features after it was revealed that the county was short of around 450 governors.

The pieces outlined the role of governors, explained why they were so vital to schools and described what skills were required.

The response has been emphatic with a significant rise in the number of applications throughout the county.

Trevor Pringle, education officer at the city council, said: “We are pleased with the response to the Mercury’s appeal and also with the response to our own campaign.”

But Simon Galton, joint cabinet lead member for education at the county council, warned that the task had only just begun.

He said: “We still need more governors and would appeal to other people who are interested in finding out more to get in touch.”
