Mercury helping readers get back into work

The Leicester Mercury has helped a 23-year-old man back into work after featuring his story in the paper.

Lee Porter was one of five unemployed readers featured in the paper as part of its We Want To Work campaign.

After a profile of him was printed in the Mercury he was invited for an interview at a local catering equipment firm and has been told that there is a job waiting for him after he has completed a six-week computer course.

Lee told the Mercury: “I am really excited.

“All I have to do is get my computer course and there will be a job there for me.

“I want to thank the Merury for helping me out. If it was not for the campaign, I would not have got the interview.”

The campaign aims to reduce the number of jobless people in the area and raise awareness of the region’s unemployment, which sees 13,000 people in Leicestershire chasing 5,000 registered jobs.

The other four readers featured come from a variety of backgrounds and previous employment, including an ex-textile and engineering worker, a junior chef and a former apprentice painter, and three of them have been contacted by local companies.
