Lineker gives his backing

Football legend Gary Lineker is backing the Leicester Mercury’s latest campaign – to help rapidly sinking Leicester City football club to stay in the Premiership.

The former Leicester City star, now an anchorman for BBC sports programmes, is lending his support to the club which is currently bottom of the table.

Between 1979 and 1985 he played 216 games for Leicester, scoring 103 goals.

Gary said: “Leicester City is still the first result I look for.

“I hope we can do it. I’ll back the campaign – if everyone gets behind the team, I can tell you, it does make a difference.

“The players have got to show, though, by their commitment, that there’s still a chance we can stay up.”

The Mercury is citing the current season as the most important in the club’s 116-year-history and is reluctant to see it slip into the First Division – especially as a new £35m, 32,000-seater stadium has just been built.

Relegation would not only cost the club millions, but continued efforts to raise the profile of Leicestershire would also be damaged.
