Drugs work helps police net hauls worth £2.8m

A Scottish newspaper has been praised for its role in police drugs seizures totalling £2.8m.

The haul, by Lothian and Borders Police, was collected during last year thanks to “significant” help from the Daily Record.

The force is celebrating its most successful crackdown and Deputy Chief Constable Tom Wood said: “What the Daily Record has done is to raise the profile of drugs and the problem throughout Scotland and that cannot be underestimated.

“Our success will only lie with public assistance and participation and the commitment of the Daily Record with its circulation and hitting power – you could not buy that kind of advertising.”

The Daily Record’s campaign on the back of the police’s Operation Foil left drug dealers isolated as communities united against them.

The paper even ran reports of drugs being dumped as the tide turned.

Tip-offs from the public and detective work led to hidden drugs in woodlands and fields being discovered and in one instance £30,000 of ecstasy tablets being found in a car boot.

But despite the successes, the police are warning they still cannot win the fight on their own.
