Donor crisis in Yorkshire

Yorkshire has been plunged into a transplant crisis, the Evening Post has reported, with the number of organ transplants plummeting to an all-time low.

Not a single life-saving transplant has been carried out in the region for over a month.

The region could usually expect two organ donations a week, but since the middle of August there have not been any.

Yorkshire’s transplant co-ordinator Steve Bell told the paper that he believes much of the shortage is due to people not knowing their relatives’ wishes.

It underlines the importance of campaigns to encourage people to carry donor cards and join the national organ register.

The Yorkshire Evening Post is at the forefront of these campaigns and has so far helped boost donors by 20,000.
