D-Day battle is on for Express

A battle to ensure proper recognition for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings next year is striking a chord with readers of the Yeovil Express.

Petition forms are flooding back into the newspaper office after they were printed in the Express last week.

Editor Ken Bird is supporting the efforts of local MP David Laws to ensure recognition of the historic date nation-wide.

He said: “Within just a few days of the petition being launched we were under no doubt how much next year’s anniversary means to the veterans.

“It would be a real kick in the teeth to them if the anniversary is not properly marked.”

Shops, businesses and pubs are being targeted to get the widest possible gauge of feeling in the area.

The petition will run until the end of the month and then the MP will take it to Downing Street or the Ministry of Defence.
