CBI chiefs back road campaign – two years on

Britain’s biggest business organisation has called for action on the A14 – two years after the Cambridge Evening News and its readers made similar demands.

Back in 1998 when the News launched its campaign, 10,500 readers backed its calls to widen the A14 and make the road safer.

Now the plea has been echoed by the Confederation of British Industry – which speaks for 250,000 businesses – at its national conference in Birmingham.

Harold Eatock, the CBI’s East of England Director, said: “Businesses in the region have been consistently highlighting the problems it is causing them. Quite simply, we believe it is strangling the growth of the Cambridge sub-region.”

In its opinion column, the News said: “We led calls for the road to be widened and for improved safety measures nearly two years ago and took the protests of the News and our readers to 10 Downing Street.”

The piece added that anyone using the road on a regular basis knew the problems, while surveys have shown the frightening increase in traffic in recent times and the horrifying accidents that come with that.

“We don’t want the talking to stop. But it is time for action on the A14… and we need it now,” it concluded.
