Bus Watch victory

The Southern Daily Echo is tasting victory in its Bus Watch campaign after one of the local bus firms appointed a new manager to solve the problem of late-running services.

The Southampton-based newspaper has been highly critical of bus company First for axing some services and leaving others running late.

As well as the new manager, in the wake of the chaos, Southampton City Council has also promised to create its own bus users’ forum.

Local MP Alan Whitehead said: “The idea of a bus users’ group, which would continue the good work already started by the Echo’s Bus Watch campaign, would be a very good thing.”

Sandra Smith, chief officer of Age Concern Southampton, said: “I think this is a terrific idea because consultation with the older people who use the buses is very important. It’s got to be a ‘well done’ to the Echo.”
