Bury Times to protect town "institutions"

A double campaign has been launched by the Bury Times to protect two of the town’s most well-known institutions.

Not only is the paper helping to raise £20,000 to keep Bury FC afloat but it has also stepped in to save the town’s annual carnival.

Bury FC need the cash to stay in business and the Times hopes to raise enough money to keep the club going beyond that point.

Celebrities and former players are backing the paper’s Save our Shakers campaign and anyone who donates £5 or more will be listed in a roll of honour.

Meanwhile the Times has stepped in to hold the Bury Carnival after it was scrapped last year for the first time in 30 years.

Organisers, the Red Lions, had been reluctant to pull the plug and are delighted that the paper came to the rescue.

President Mike Davis said: “We had struggled for a few years and to have a large company in the town, like the Bury Times Group, come forward is a tremendous boost.”
