Anthem back after Mercury pressure

The Leicester Mercury has helped to bring back the Gallop to Leicester City football ground.

After relocating to their new Walkers Stadium, Leicester City FC decided to ditch their traditional entrance anthem, the Post Horn Gallop.

But a Bring Back the Gallop campaign by the Mercury has caused the club to bow to the wishes of its fans and reinstated the tune.

The anthem has been part of the pre-match build-up at Leicester City since the 1930s, but had been replaced this season with Orff’s opera classic Carmina Burana and House of Pain’s hip-hop hit Jump Around.

Launching the campaign to get the Gallop reinstated, the Mercury said: “Leicester City may have changed its home this season, but there is no need for the club to abandon all its traditions.

“The Leicester Mercury is backing calls by fans to restore the Post Horn Gallop to its rightful place – heralding the entrance of the team on to the pitch on match days.”

After the Mercury featured the views of City fans and former players, the club decided to reverse its decision.

City manager Micky Adams said: “We got it wrong. I wasn’t aware of the feeling it would create.”
