Cambridgeshire weekly goes live on the web

A new online edition of the Fenland Citizen can now be found on the world wide web, with the launch of its first website.

All the latest news, sport and entertainment from the weekly paper can now also be found at www.fenlandtoday.co.uk – and has met with a positive response from readers.

In the first nine days since launch the website racked up more than 4,600 page impressions.

Web editor Emma Henderson said: “It’s not bad going for quite a small town.

“It takes time to generate awareness. We had a piece on the front page of the Citizen the day it went live and followed that up with ads in the paper.”

The site has been designed using the standard Johnston Press New Media format, and is geared up for search engine optimisation.

Emma said: “We’ve spoken to other local websites to try and get them to link to us as that helps with the search engine rankings.”

Emma is also the web editor of Peterboroughtoday – the online home of the Evening Telegraph – and she said that the launch of a weekly newspaper website provided a new challenge.

She said: “Obviously we’re very busy with the Peterborough website updating it daily.

“With the Citizen being a weekly it’s a different ball game – it’s a new area and a much smaller community so we have a lot of different content.”
