Big Picture appeal success

Readers of the Liverpool Echo have helped raise nearly £100,000 for a new cancer unit at Alder Hey Hospital.

The hospital has issued a big thank you to Echo readers after their overwhelming response to the paper’s Big Picture Appeal.

The appeal took off when paper told how young cancer sufferers on ward C3 had to struggle against their devastating illness while living in outdated cramped conditions on the ward.

Many readers were touched by their story and organised fund-raising events and sent in a donation, along with their photo to be put up at the hospital.

Thousands of faces will appear on giant Echo front pages that have been put together to hang on the walls of the new unit.

“We are delighted with the response to the Big Picture Appeal. Not only have we almost reached the £100,000 mark, but it has been a great way of raising our profile,” said Christine Done, Alder Hey Hospital’s fundraising manager.

“Thank you to the Echo and all its readers.”
