Ash Wednesday deadline approaches

Ash Wednesday, March 8, is the appropriate date for National No Smoking Day.

This year it is also one of the focal points in the Hull Daily Mail’s “Trash the Ash” campaign.

Launched on November 15, the campaign aims to persuade 2,000 readers to give up smoking in the year 2000.

The newspaper has featured regular updates on the experiences of some of the 300 people who have signed up so far. It is now urging smokers to complete a form from the paper, pledging to give up the habit on March 8 this year.

The “Trash the Ash” campaign is being run in partnership with East Riding Health Authority, Hull and East Riding Pharmacy Development Group, Humberside Alliance on Tobacco (HALT) and the Health Action Zone.

It offers advice, support and a host of top tips on giving up smoking.

There are an estimated 130,000 smokers aged 16 and over in the East Riding Health Authority area.
