A well-deserved pat on the back: Hull Daily Mail

The Hull Daily Mail told its readers that Research Surveys of Great Britain had found that more people in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire read its evening newspaper than read a national newspaper.

Every day, the researchers found, the Mail is read by 201,000 people – more than half of all people aged 15 or above in its circulation area – that’s 20,000 more people than read a national newspaper in the region.

Editor John Meehan said: “The Mail is a campaigning newspaper at the heart of its community. We aim to play an active role in the life of that community and to seize every opportunity to exert, on behalf of our readers, the powerful influence our huge local audience gives us.”

Examples of this covered during the week were the newspaper’s Stop the A63 Carnage campaign which resulted in the speed limit on an accident blackspot road being lowered from 70mph to 50mph.

The newspaper is also running a strong Save Our Bobbies campaign after 251 Humberside Police officers’ jobs came under threat. Crime reporter Lisa Berry delivered petitions with more than 800 signatures to the Home Office.

But few of its campaigns have been as hard-hitting as Drugs on Your Doorstep which was spearheaded with a dramatic page one picture of a 19-year-old fighting for his life after a heroin overdose – a fight he tragically lost.
