A well-deserved pat on the back: Birmingham Evening Mail

As well as reflecting on its achievements and its vital role at the heart of its community, the Birmingham Evening Mail used a double page spread this week to give its readers a detailed insight into a day in the life of the newspaper.

“6am: News never sleeps and reporters and Head of News Steve Dyson are already tuning in to radio and television to see what has happened overnight,” it began.

The article went on to guide readers through the whole production process, including the work of receptionists, production and circulation staff and newsagents.

Editor Ian Dowell said: “Our role is not just to sit back and wait for the news to roll in. Our role is to listen to the region’s problems and challenges and to help them change things.”

The paper revealed that to produce the Evening Mail it takes:

  • 241 editorial staff – including reporters, newsdesk designers and photographers
  • 136 circulation managers, administrators and van drivers
  • 242 advertising staff
  • 275 production and pre-press workers
  • 60 financial staff
  • 8 human resources officers
