5,500 in island police poll

Almost 5,500 Jersey Evening Post readers have taken part in a poll on plans to draft in 60 riot police from Scotland for next month’s anti-capitalism rally.

The topic has brought the biggest-ever response to an Evening Post phone poll.

It highlights the amount of controversy the police plans have caused on the island, which has a population of around 85,000.

The newspaper says almost 4,000 of the 5,500 people who took part in the phone said the extra officers ought to stay away.

Extra officers have been booked amid fears that French anarchists could disrupt the event.

Strathclyde police has confirmed it is to send the officers to help police the march organised by the Association for the Taxation of Financial Transactions for the Aid of Citizens.

Deputy Police Chief Roly Jones said: “We are planning for a peaceful day, but it would be foolish of the police not to consider the risks that could occur on such a day and not to have the appropriate response available.”

Almost 5,500 people called the special vote lines over the weekend, with 3,963 saying that Jersey should not call on the Glasgow-based force and 1,517 saying that it should.
